The Stories I Carry

My graphite pieces are a labor of love, a slow and gentle conversation that unfolds with each layer. I approach them much like a painting, building up depth and nuance with careful observation. There's a certain luster and softness to graphite that I adore, and I think it really encourages you to slow down and appreciate the subtle details—much like taking a much-needed pause in our fast-paced lives. Often, I feel these drawings are complete and beautiful on their own, a testament to the quiet power of the medium.

While I have a soft spot for the purity of graphite, sometimes adding color brings a new dimension to the conversation. I'm still finding my way with painting, but I enjoy the same deliberate, gentle build-up process. There’s a beautiful push and pull with the composition in both, and I hope it invites you into your own quiet conversation with the art.

What kind of art really encourages you to slow down and observe?

The wise sea turtle is returning to sea. My heart beats faster as I follow it out further into the ocean than I ever have before. I’m rewarded for my faith in this gentle sea angel — the reef parts to reveal an open clearing full of damselfish of different colors and shapes, like musical notes. The ocean’s melody unveiling before my eyes.

An original graphite drawing, finished in 2016. Graphite on 20-ply 100% cotton fiber, acid-free paper illustration board. 1/2" borders for easy matting and framing.
